Membership Information

Thank you for visiting our Web site and expressing interest in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. If you would like to speak directly with someone about our organization please contact our Division Staff Officer listed above. Membership in the Coast Guard Auxiliary is open to men and women who are citizens of the United States and are at least 17 years of age. No boat is required! If you have an interest in learning more about seamanship, helping others, and working with the Coast Guard, you will find the Coast Guard Auxiliary a great place to meet people with similar interests.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian arm of the U.S. Coast Guard devoted to promoting boating safety. Our major activities are: educating the public through adult and youth education classes; Vessel Safety Checks (insuring that vessels have all the required safety equipment aboard) and Operations where Auxiliary vessels and crew do Search and Rescue patrols scheduled by the Coast Guard. In addition, like any organization where each members safety depends upon the prudent actions of fellow members, a high degree of camaraderie exists between members.

We are a volunteer organization committed to assisting the Coast Guard in accomplishing it aims and missions. Our members take great pride and personal satisfaction in the volunteer work they do. As a volunteer, trained and prepared to protect the lives and property of your fellow boaters, you have the opportunity to provide a public service of the highest order. In addition, the benefits of membership such as discounts on your insurance, extensive educational opportunities and the fellowship of our organization are valuable.

While experience or expertise in areas such as education and boating is helpful, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will train you to perform in any of its missions which may be of interest to you. In addition to attending meetings, your involvement in one or more of our programs is necessary to maintain a strong Auxiliary. Instructors, Boat Operators, Boat Crew Members, Radio Watch Standers, Vessel Examiners and personnel to hold staff positions or elected offices are always in need. If you are willing to contribute your time and expertise to the Coast Guard Auxiliary we need you as a member.

Our Flotilla holds it's business meetings on the second Thursday of every month at building 611. deck 2 of Ft. Totten, Queens, NY. The meetings begin at 8:00pm, coffee is served at 8PM. You are cordially invited to attend our meetings, and if you are so inclined, we will welcome you into our organization. Please feel free to bring a friend or a guest with you.

About Our Flotilla Flotilla 1SR-12-01 is located in Fort Totten, Bayside, NY. Currently our flotilla consists of 51 active members and 12 Operational Facilities, 4 Radio Facilities. We operate under the direct supervision of USCG Station Kings Point. We provide free vessel safety checks at local marinas. We also offer boating classes to the public in Queens and Nassau counties. Course offerings include boating safety, navigation, sailing, etc. Please visit the pages of our website for more detailed information. Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, maritime security and environmental protection and Coast Guard Academy introduction programs for youth. Auxiliarists volunteer more than 2 million hours annually. For members we provide more advanced training in such topics as seamanship, navigation, communications, weather, boat crew, coxswain, etc. This provides the skills necessary to serve and enjoy the fellowship of the Auxiliary.

Public Education Training classes are being organized at this time!

Coast Guard Auxiliary Spring Classes:

Your local Coast Guard Auxiliary is holding classes locally for instruction

in "Boating Safely." These courses are meant for the new and returning

boater to become familiar with the ever changing world on the water. 

Taught by experienced Coast Guard Auxiliary members with years of boating

experience the courses are from 1 DAY or 4 weeks in length and segments can be

taken in which you are interested. There is a final examination and a

certificate which may save you money on your boat insurance, issued to all who

complete the courses.

In Queens at Fort Totten the class starts 20 March at 7:30 PM. Contact: Mike Kaff

Each year the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary saves almost 500 lives, and assists over 11,000 boatersin distress. The auxiliary annually conducts 29,000 safety patrols, 1,600 air patrols, and operates 2,300 radio stations nationally. Additionally the Auxiliary preempts problems by performing almost 200,000 vessel safety checks and educating over 500,000 students in boating safety classes.
